Nairobi or Gigiri: Choosing the Right Base for Your Kenya Trip
Central Nairobi puts you in the middle of markets, museums and matatus, while Gigiri offers calm, embassies and leafy streets a short drive from the city.

Where You'll Actually Spend Your Time
Nairobi's central business district is compact but intense. If your days involve the National Museum on Museum Hill, the Railway Museum on Station Road, or meetings around Kenyatta Avenue and Kimathi Street, stay within walking distance of the CBD or along the Uhuru Highway corridor. Hotels in Upper Hill and Milimani sit 5–10 minutes by car from the CBD and cost roughly KES 8,000–15,000 per night for a mid-range double, while full-service international brands in the same area run KES 18,000–30,000. The trade-off is traffic: peak-hour drives from Milimani to Westlands can take 45 minutes.
Gigiri, about 12 km north of the CBD, is the diplomatic quarter. The UN complex and the Australian, Canadian and US missions anchor the area, and Village Market on Limuru Road is the main shopping and dining hub. If your trip revolves around embassy meetings, UN business or a conference at the UN Office, staying here saves you 30–60 minutes each way. Hotels range from guesthouses at KES 7,000 to international properties at KES 25,000+, and the air is noticeably quieter.
Getting Around: Matatus, Uber and the Expressway
From central Nairobi, the matatu network is cheap and constant, but routes and stages change often and can be confusing for a first visit. Ride-hailing apps are simpler and widely used: a trip from the CBD to Westlands is typically KES 400–800 depending on demand, and to Gigiri KES 800–1,500. The Nairobi Expressway has cut the run from the CBD to the Gigiri exit to about 15 minutes outside peak hours, but budget 40–60 minutes between 7am and 9am or 4pm and 7pm. If you plan to use the expressway, confirm your driver's account is topped up.
For day trips, both bases work. Wilson Airport, the departure point for flights to the Maasai Mara and Amboseli, is about 6 km from the CBD and 20 km from Gigiri; from Gigiri allow an hour in rush hour. Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is 15 km southeast of the city. If you are flying out early, a hotel near JKIA in Embakasi or a central property with a 4am transfer is more practical than crossing the city from Gigiri at dawn.
Costs, Comfort and Best Months
Central Nairobi gives you more choice at every budget. You can find clean mid-range rooms in Kilimani and along Ngong Road for KES 7,000–12,000, and there are hostels and budget hotels around Tom Mboya Street for under KES 5,000. Gigiri skews pricier and quieter; the same money buys a smaller room, but you get space, trees and easy access to Village Market's restaurants and cinema. Groceries and meals are comparable in both areas, though Gigiri's expat-oriented cafés charge a premium.
Weather is steady year-round thanks to the altitude, but the long rains from late March to May bring afternoon downpours and the short rains in November are lighter. January and February are dry and clear, with temperatures in the low 20s Celsius. July and August are cooler and overcast. I would book central Nairobi for a first trip of four nights or fewer, and Gigiri if your schedule is anchored to the UN or an embassy and you value a calmer evening.
What to Skip and What I'd Book
Skip hotels directly on the CBD's busiest streets if you are sensitive to noise; River Road and the area around the country bus station are congested and not ideal for a leisure stay. Also skip the idea of walking everywhere after dark; use a ride-hailing app for evening trips in both areas. In Gigiri, skip properties far up Limuru Road without a shuttle, as the walk to Village Market can be dark and poorly lit.
For most travellers, I would book central Nairobi: a mid-range hotel in Upper Hill or Kilimani, five to ten minutes from the museum and the CBD, with easy access to Wilson Airport for safari flights. Choose Gigiri only if your days are tied to the UN or nearby embassies. Both areas are safe with normal precautions, and both give you a good base for a Nairobi National Park game drive, which is 7 km from the city centre.
Questions, answered
Is Gigiri safe for tourists?
Yes. Gigiri is one of Nairobi's most secure areas, home to the UN and several embassies. Use a ride-hailing app after dark and stick to well-lit roads around Village Market. Normal city precautions apply, as in any capital.
How far is Gigiri from Nairobi's city centre?
Gigiri is about 12 km north of the CBD. By car it takes 15–20 minutes outside peak hours via the Nairobi Expressway, but 40–60 minutes during the 7–9am and 4–7pm rush.
Which area is better for a first-time visitor?
Central Nairobi, especially Upper Hill, Milimani or Kilimani. You are closer to the National Museum, the CBD and Wilson Airport for safari flights. Gigiri suits embassy or UN trips and travellers who prefer quieter evenings.
