About Karen Blixen Museum
The Karen Blixen Museum occupies the 1912 farmhouse at the foot of the Ngong Hills where the Danish writer Karen Blixen lived from 1917 to 1931, running a coffee estate on the land. Built by the Swedish engineer Ake Sjogren, the house became the setting of Out of Africa, published under the name Isak Dinesen in 1937. Denmark gave it to the Kenyan government in 1964, and National Museums of Kenya opened it as a museum in 1986. The stone bungalow stands in fourteen acres of lawn and indigenous trees, furnished as a middle-class colonial farmhouse rather than a mansion. Visitors come for the guided walk-through of about 40 minutes, included in the ticket, moving from the verandah into the sitting room, the dining room, Blixen's study with its writing desk and typewriter, then her bedroom and the bathroom. Behind the house, the old coffee drying and grading machinery, the ox wagon and farm tools remain, and from the western fence the four knuckles of the Ngong Hills sit exactly where the book puts them.
